Initial briefing investigated the scope for an environmentally friendly and contemporary family home on an acreage about 10 minutes out of town.
The young family is a fairly social collective and of traditional character. Together with friends and extended family, the community of the home gathers around the heart of family life – mum’s great cooking! The kitchen is, then, the nerve centre of the home and exerts it’s controlling influence on the planning and form. It stands as an island in the continuum of family space. There is no ‘formal’ living, rather an interconnected series of spaces modulate from ‘public’ to ‘private’ areas. Large sliding wall panels allow sections of the home to be closed off for thermal comfort and/or additional privacy.
