PROJECT
ST MICHAELS
CLIENT
GLENRAY
LOCATION
BATHURST/NSW
COMPLETION
2019
Glenray provides residential care and work for people with a range of ability. This project, over several stages, is reconfiguring the St Michael’s site to create a new street of group homes surrounding the institutional ‘children’s home’ which has dominated since the 1950’s. The new houses borrow from the form of the original building, progressively adjusting its scale to achieve small cottage forms that add individual identity along the street. Familiar and iconic elements, including the picket fence, front path and carport, further normalise the domestic experience for the residents.
The homes provide up to 6 bedrooms plus carers’ accommodation, multiple living spaces and wet areas cogniscent of access and safety standards, in a simple and efficient 200m2 footprint.
Government mandate and utilitarian brief are interpreted with contextual and social sensitivity to deliver a modern cost-effective new community.
